SEO optimizes to rank a page in search results. AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) optimizes to become the single direct answer in featured snippets, voice results, and answer boxes. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) optimizes to be cited as a source inside AI-generated answers from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google’s AI Overviews. They are not competing disciplines or separate budgets: all three depend on the same retrieval layer, so a page that cannot be found and trusted cannot rank, cannot answer, and cannot be cited.
Three acronyms, one anxious question from every marketing lead we talk to: do I now need three strategies and three budgets?
The short answer is no. The longer answer is more useful, because the differences between SEO, AEO, and GEO are real, they change what you produce, and getting the distinction wrong is expensive in both directions. Overreact and you defund the channel that still pays your bills. Underreact and you become invisible on the surface where an increasing share of research now happens.

What Do SEO, AEO, and GEO Actually Mean?
Most confusion here is definitional, not strategic. Each term describes a different unit of victory — what you are actually trying to win.
SEO tries to win a position. The unit is the page, the prize is a spot in the ten blue links, and success is measured in rankings, impressions, and clicks. This is the discipline everyone knows, and it has not gone anywhere.
AEO tries to win the answer. The unit is the passage, the prize is the featured snippet, the People Also Ask expansion, or the voice assistant’s spoken reply, and success means being the response rather than one of ten options. AEO predates generative AI by years — it started when Google began lifting a single paragraph above the results.
GEO tries to win the citation. The unit is the chunk of text an AI model retrieves, the prize is being named and linked inside a synthesized answer, and success is measured in citations and brand mentions rather than positions. Where AEO fights to be the one answer, GEO fights to be one of the two to five sources the model draws from and credits.
Notice what all three share. Before a model can cite you, a snippet can quote you, or a result can rank you, something has to retrieve your page. That shared dependency is the whole reason these are not three budgets.

The Numbers Everyone Quotes Disagree With Each Other
Here is the part most GEO articles leave out, and it matters more than any single statistic they cite.
Take one apparently simple question: what share of AI referral traffic comes from ChatGPT? Three studies published in 2026 answer it three different ways.

Same metric, same year, a 25-point spread. And the instability is not only between sources. Goodie’s own earlier wave, covering May to August 2025, put ChatGPT at 89.1% — the same team, the same method, 26 points higher eight months earlier.
It would be easy to conclude that all of these numbers are noise. They are not, and the detail that proves it is worth more than the headline: on Perplexity’s share, two of these sources land within a rounding error of each other — 7.23% and 7.3%. The disagreement is not random. It is concentrated exactly where scope and timing differ. Goodie measures B2B brands; Conductor spans ten industries. ChatGPT’s share is genuinely higher outside B2B, so both can be right about different slices of the web.
That is the practical lesson, and it is more useful than any of the three numbers. A statistic is not true or false on its own. It is true of a particular panel, in a particular window, under a particular definition of the word “referral”. Strip those away and you are left with something that sounds authoritative and means very little.
The zero-click figures, by contrast, hold up well, because the methodology is disclosed and the sample is stated. SparkToro’s analysis of Similarweb clickstream data puts US zero-click searches at 68%, up from 60.45% in 2024 and roughly 45% a decade ago. Pew Research tracked 900 US adults across 68,879 real Google searches in March 2025, of which 12,593 produced an AI summary, and found clicks fell to 8% of visits when a summary appeared against 15% when it did not. Those you can build on.
So here is the rule we now apply to every AI-search claim before it enters a client strategy:
- Demand the sample. A percentage without a stated panel, query count, and date range is marketing, not measurement.
- Prefer clickstream and log data over survey data for behavioural questions like clicks and referrals.
- Trust direction, distrust magnitude. Every credible source agrees clicks are falling and AI answers are growing. Almost none agree on by how much.
- Measure your own site. Your GA4 referral data and Search Console impressions are the only figures that describe your market.
That last point is the one that actually changes outcomes. The industry-wide numbers tell you the weather; only your own analytics tell you your climate.

Strip away the acronym marketing and four things genuinely changed between traditional search and AI search.
1. The click stopped being the default outcome. When 68% of searches end without a click, ranking first no longer guarantees traffic. Pew Research measured an 8% click-through rate on searches showing an AI Overview against 15% without one — the presence of a generated answer roughly halves the likelihood anyone leaves the results page.
2. Competition compressed. A first page holds ten organic results. An AI answer typically credits two to five sources. Positions six through ten used to earn something; in a generated answer they earn nothing. The distribution moved from a long tail to a very short one.
3. The retrieved unit shrank. Search engines rank documents; language models retrieve passages. A brilliant page whose key claim is buried in paragraph fourteen, hedged across three sentences, may never surface as a quotable chunk. Structure became a ranking factor in a way it never quite was before.
4. Verifiability started paying. Models favour claims they can attribute. Research from Princeton and Georgia Tech on generative engine optimization found that adding citations, quotations, and statistics measurably raised a page’s visibility in AI answers. Unsourced assertion is now a competitive disadvantage, not merely a stylistic weakness.
What Did Not Change
This section exists because the previous one is routinely used to sell panic.
Retrieval still runs on the search index. AI engines do not maintain a separate, kinder web. They draw from the same crawled, indexed corpus. A page that is not indexed, or that loads badly, or that no one links to, does not become citable because you added an FAQ block.
Authority still decides ties. When several pages answer a question equally clearly, models resolve the tie roughly the way search does — toward sources with stronger entity signals and a credible reputation. There is no GEO trick that substitutes for being known.
This also means local search is far less disrupted than the headlines suggest. Proximity, profile completeness and consistent business details still decide who appears for local service queries, and none of those signals is an AI problem.
Traditional search still carries the volume. This is the number that should keep budgets honest: every AI chatbot combined still accounts for well under one percent of search referrals. AI search traffic has grown enormously in relative terms — roughly sixteenfold between 2024 and 2026 — but it grew from a very small base. Google still sends the overwhelming majority of referral traffic on the open web.
Both things are true at once: AI search is the fastest-growing discovery surface, and it is still the smaller one. A strategy that treats it as either a fad or a replacement gets the next two years wrong.
Where Should Your Budget Go?
The honest allocation depends on one variable most agencies skip: how much authority you already have.

For a domain with little authority, the sequencing matters enormously. Emerging topics are the exception that makes early GEO worthwhile: on subjects where established publishers have not yet arrived, a well-structured, well-evidenced page can be cited long before it could ever rank for a competitive commercial term. That is a real opening, and it closes as the topic matures.
How to Optimize for All Three in One Workflow
You do not need three content processes. You need one, with three checks at the end.
- Pick a question a real buyer asks. Not a keyword fragment — a question, phrased the way someone would type or speak it.
- Answer it in the first 60 words, directly. No throat-clearing, no history of the industry. This one habit serves AEO and GEO simultaneously: it produces the extractable passage and the retrievable chunk in the same paragraph.
- Make every heading a question or a clear claim. Headings are retrieval anchors. “Our Approach” anchors nothing.
- Attach evidence to every non-obvious claim. A named source, a figure, a date. This is what turns a paragraph into something a model is willing to attribute.
- Chunk deliberately. Short sections, one idea each, self-contained enough to make sense when lifted out of context — because that is exactly what happens to them.
- Keep the depth below the answer. Answer first, then earn the reader who stays. This satisfies both the model and the human, in that order.
- Fix the entity layer once. Consistent name, address, and phone details; organization schema; a real team page; the same brand description everywhere. Then run the three checks: Would this rank? (SEO) Could a snippet lift one paragraph and be correct? (AEO) Would a model be willing to attribute this claim to us? (GEO)
How Do You Measure Each One?
Different surfaces, different instruments. Reporting all three as “traffic” hides everything interesting.

There is no Search Console for AI citations yet. The workable substitute is unglamorous and effective: list your fifteen highest-value questions, run them monthly through ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews, and record every brand mentioned and every URL cited. Within three months you have a trend line, a competitor set, and a specific list of pages to fix. We have yet to find a tool that beats doing this properly by hand.
One caution on GA4: AI referral volumes are small enough that a single week’s noise looks like a trend. Compare quarters, not weeks.
The Mistakes We See Most Often
Treating GEO as a content-volume play. Publishing forty thin pages to “cover the topic” is the fastest route to being classified as scaled content abuse. Citation rewards clarity and evidence, not tonnage.
Adding FAQ schema and calling it AEO. Schema describes content; it does not create it. If the answer on the page is vague, marking it up makes it vague and structured. Worth knowing too: Google stopped showing FAQ rich results in May 2026, so the visible payoff people expect from this is already gone.
Chasing citations before fixing indexing. We regularly audit sites investing in GEO while their key pages are blocked, orphaned, or duplicated. Retrieval comes first, always.
Abandoning what works. Cutting a channel that still delivers most of your qualified traffic in favour of one that delivers a fraction of a percent is not forward-thinking. It is a forecasting error with a budget attached.
Copying one statistic from a secondary write-up. As shown above, the same metric ran from 62.6% to 87.4% across three 2026 studies, and one of those sources had itself published 89.1% eight months earlier. Cite the study, not the summary of the study — a secondary write-up is precisely where a figure gets separated from the scope that gave it meaning.

The entity work that improves AI citation — consistent name, address, phone, and organization schema — happens to be the same work that improves local visibility.
The Verdict
SEO, AEO, and GEO are three outputs of one system, not three departments. The page that ranks, the passage that gets lifted into a snippet, and the chunk a model decides to attribute are usually the same piece of writing — clear, evidenced, well-structured, published by an entity the web recognizes. Build for that and you are optimizing for all three by construction.
The single most useful action this week: take your five most valuable buyer questions, run them through ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google, and write down who gets cited. That list is your real competitive set — and it is frequently not the one in your ranking report.
